Tips to Prevent Tooth Discoloration

Are your teeth not as white as you would like? We would all love white, sparkling teeth! Here is an explanation of why your teeth are not as white as you would like, and how you can prevent it!

There are three types of discoloration:
Extrinsic discoloration occurs when the enamel is stained. Drinking coffee, sodas, red wine, smoking, and eating acidic foods can lead to this.

Intrinsic discoloration occurs when the inner structure, dentin, darkens. This type of discoloration can be a result of certain medicines, too much fluoride exposure as a child, or any trauma to the tooth.

Age related discoloration is a combination of both extrinsic and intrinsic.

Prevention

You can prevent tooth discoloration by avoiding foods and drinks that may stain your teeth, brushing your teeth after meals, or rinsing your mouth, and by making regular hygiene appointments.

Treatment

Some stains can be removed during professional cleanings. While whitening toothpastes do not change the overall color of your teeth, they can help remove minor stains.

At our office, we offer several options to whiten teeth, including professional whitening gels and treatments, as well as Zoom Whitening. If you have a crown or intrinsic discoloration, we may recommend veneers or bonding.
